A group of islands located in the Behring sea, 200 miles n w of Unalaska, the nearest p o. The most important of the group are St George and St Paul, where the fur seals congregate during the months of June and July. These islands are inhabited by 300 natives, whose sole occupation is the killing and skinning of seals and the salting and packing of their pelts. The islands are leased by the North American Commercial Co from the government at an annual rental of $100,000 and $9.62 each not to exceed 100,000 seal skins taken yearly.
