(appointed by Pres. in 1822 at 500.00 salary) "The Toll House was placed in the custody of the Allegany County Historical Society in 1958 by the state of Maryland which had recently purchased it, thus it escaped demolition as had been planned for it. Cresap Chapter of the DAR assumed responsibility for it and took over the maintenance of the inside of the building. In 1965 the LaVale Century Club assumed responsibility for operation of the Toll House - with Allegany County Historical Society retaining custody."
