He imigrated ca 1715-1720 at Perth Amboy. Desire info to support/deny "family tradition" which states a John was murdered by Indians. Too many Johns to sort from! Would any of this be substantiated in this book? Am also researching Nathaniel KIRBY, who m. Elizabeth GASTON (b.31 mar 1788) feb 1810 but can find no trace of Nathaniel other than his death in 1833. I suppose he would have to "be somebody" to be included in the book, but thought it was worth asking. Articles span 1916-1917. Like roots you will have to find their sources. These articles can only be used as clues, but in some cases they cite their sources. #5956 This is another article on the 'Early Settlers of Freneau" discussing owners of lot #16 that passed through the hands of John Griggs. Hence he expounds on the Griggs family. "John Griggs was living near Gravesend, Long Island, 1677. John Griggs, and wife Jane, had baptized at Christ Church, Shrewsbury, daughters, Elizabeth, June 18, 1752, and Margaret, May 14, 1755. They were either of Freneau or Matawan. Daniel Griggs was living at Toms River, 1780. Benjamin Griggs married, Brick Church, Bradevelt, November 26, 1778, Anne Conover, a widow. "Benjamin Griggs, born Middlesex County, September 25, 1774, removed to Monmouth County in 1805. His wife was Mary Whitlock. He died February 26, 1847, and is buried, with his wife at Tennent. He had children: John W. (who operated a distillery at Marlboro), Lydia, William (who married Lydia Holman, and was the father of Captain Benjamin Griggs of Middletown Village), Edmund, Mary and Benjamin (of Matawan, who married Mary, born January 2, 1814, daughter of John O. Stillwell of near Hazlet). ---------- On the Griggs family, William Hornor, "THIS OLD MONMOUTH OF OURS," has a mention (pg. 121) of a Jane Griggs having eight children (named) by husband Samuel Perrine, b. 8-27-1792, son of Andrew. In John Stillwell, M.D.'s "HISTORICAL AND GENEALOGICAL MISCELLANY:" vol.4, pg. 254, the marriage of Capt. Benjamin Griggs to Mat (Martha?) Wilson @1840-no issue; and, pg. 368, a William Grigg m. Sept, 1766, Eleanah (Helen Stout)-no issue. Vol. 5, pg. 403, has the marriage of Mary Whitlock and Benjamin Griggs and children of the Jersey Gen column article. Several other Griggs, none your Benjamin. It also includes this statement on pg. 394: "William H. Stillwell, Esq., in a written pedigree of his ancestry, gave to John, son of George Griggs the Immigrant, a son John Griggs, who married Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Whitlock, the First. Whence he obtained this information I know not and it is unsupported by any evidence that I know of." Vol.3, pg. 121, of "HIST. & GEN. MISC." has a mid1800s marriage of William Griggs and Amy Bray-no background on the William Vol 2, pg. 100, of "HIST. & GEN. MISC." has from the St. Mary's Church records, Burlington Co., NJ, the marriage of Amos Gregg and Eliza Monkton Malcolm in Pennsyl'a on Sept. 17, 1806. And on pg. 327, in the Tennent Churchyard the stones: Benjamin Griggs died, Feb. 26, 1847, aged 72-5-1 Mary, his wife, died, Oct. 18, 1859, aged 84-10-0 ____________________________________________________________
