Mr. Gray was born at Stewartsville, Westmoreland county, Pa., on May 9, 1843, the son of James and Rebecca Crosby Gray. He attended the country school at that place, and in August, 1863, enlisted at Pittsburg in Company H, One Hundred and Thirty-sixth regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He was severely wounded at Fredericksburg on Dec. 13, 1862, and after his return from the army located in Pittsburg. In 1869, he was appointed health officer of Pittsburg, later becoming superintendent of the bureau of health, retaining this position almost continuously until 1900. Mr. Gray was past commander of Post No. 3, G. A. R., and for several years had been its chaplain. In January, 1871, he was married to Harriet M. Henry, who survives, together with a daughter and two sons: Mrs. William S. Boyd, of Rosslyn Farms, Crosby Gray, Jr., of Bellevue, and Charles C. Gray, of Ingram.
