He was one of the best known men in that neighborhood. He was born in the Grand Duchy of Baden in 1838, and was brought to this country when an infant. The family located first in Pittsburg and then moved to Butler. From there Mr. Gschwend moved to Shaler township, where he lived for 28 years. He served three terms as justice of the peace and then moved to Sharpsburg. Deceased was a proficient musician, and at various times directed the choir of St. Joseph's Church, Sharpsburg, and the choirs of St. Ann's and St. Anthony's Churches, Millvale, in the latter for 16 years. For 42 years Mr. Gschwend was toll collector on the Butler plank road, and retired two years ago on account of ill-health. He is survived by his wife and one son, James B. Gschwend. The funeral will be held Wednesday morning from St. Mary's Church, Sharpsburg, at 9 o'clock. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
