He was born in County Down, Ireland, February 20, 1829, but when about 15 years of age went to Canada with his parents. Some two years later he came to Pittsburg, where he learned the trade of molding. He followed that occupation for a time and then opened a cheese and grocery store. He was a charter member and one of the oldest living communicants of the First United Presbyterian Church, Union avenue, North Side. and, although he never sought political honors nor became affiliate with fraternal organizations, he was one of the best-known men on the North Side. In 1851 he married Miss Eliza Jane McFarland. Ten children were born to them, eight of whom are still living: Mrs. Margaret A. Ray, of the North Side; Walter J. Kerr, of Sewickley; Mrs. E. E. Kennedy, of Downieville, Pa.; Mrs. Charles W. Goodnough, of Bellevue; Samuel J Kerr, of Bellevue: Mrs. Alexander C. Grant, of Ben Avon, and Miss Isabel W. Kerr and James S. Kerr, at home.
