This morning, while some shifting operations were taking place, he seems to have made a false step and was crushed under the engine. As soon as the accident was discovered an ambulance was called and he was removed to the West Penn hospital. He died about 10 o'clock. from The Pittsburgh Press dated Tuesday, September 5, 1899 (page 7): Harry L PURVIS, age 29 years, employed as a brakeman on a yard engine at the Isabella furnace, Etna, died yesterday morning by falling under the wheels of a car which was being shifted across the yard. He lived at Etna and was unmarried. (under an article titled, Perisch Will Recover) from the City of Pittsburgh Death Records: Harry L PURVIS, 29 years of age, single, brakeman, died September 4, 1899, at West Penn Hospital, crushed while employed as a brakeman; son of James and Phoebe PURVIS; born in Butler Co PA; living in Etna; burial in an Etna PA cemetery on September 7, 1899.
