Bender, for the last eighteen years a resident of Tyrone, died of dropsy on Friday last, after an illness of several months, aged 54 years. Although deprived of his sight about twenty-five years ago he has been the sole manager of his former earnings which through his careful investment and economy have accumulated to about eight thousand dollars, left to his widow and a son and daughter. It is said of him that when a youth, having been duped by a fur company in whose interests he traded with the Indians, he joined a tribe of Comanche Indians, and for three years was excluded from civilization and became a veritable nomad. One day when the tribe was near the eastern Missouri line, he knocked one of the braves down, the brave having insulted the chief. Bender thought to win favor by avenging the insult. But the chief, instead of taking kindly to it, was enraged, and fearing violence, he took advantage of the first opportunity and escaped. Prior to taking up his residence at Tyrone he was a resident of Hollidaysburg. He was buried yesterday. Morning Tribune, Monday, January 12, 1880
