McCartney, one of Altoona's most popular and well-known young men, died at his home in the Seventh ward yesterday afternoon at 5:45 o'clock. Just as the shadows of evening were taking their flight his spirit passed quietly away, summoned before its Maker. Although not a member of any church he was one of those members of society who treated rich and poor alike and made all alike his friends. The deceased was born, lived and died on the same farm. He was a son of John McCartney and Charlotte, the latter surviving him. His parents had several children, but there are only two left - Mrs. John A. Smith and Mrs. G. Louis Myers. John the younger was married to Anna N. Rose, daughter of Judge Rose, in February, 1871. He leaves three small children, the oldest one but 8 years old, to mourn a father's loss. Mr. McCartney besides attending to the duties of his farm was in the coal business along with Councilman Sampson Taylor. He was a prominent man in public affairs, and although but in his 36th year, had served two terms in Council, and was prominently mentioned as a candidate for the next session of the Legislature. He was an original member of the Vigilant Fire Company and was its first First Vice President, taking an active part in its organization. He was a young man of more than ordinary ability, well educated and beloved by all who knew him. He was aged 35 years, 3 months and 21 days and had been sick but a few months. A year ago he was a strong, hearty young man, with the brightest prospects before him, but now lies stricken by the hand of death, leaving a sorrowing wife and many friends. The funeral will take place on Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock, from the house, Interment in Fairview cemetery. Morning Tribune, Altoona, Pa., Wednesday, March 3, 1880 Funeral of John C. McCartney.
