Major Edgar Thomson Miller, father of Mrs. S. Lloyd McCarthy, of this city, died at his home in Media, Delaware county, Pa., on Sunday, March 9, of uremia. The deceased was born near the town of Media, where he spent most of his life. When a young man, at the request of J. Edgar Thomson, the first president of the Pennsylvania railroad, a cousin, for whom he was named, he went to Iowa, to take charge of Mr. Thomson's interests in that state. While there the Civil war began, and he enlisted in the 15th Iowa regiment, serving with that organization for three and one half years, or until the close of the war. During that time he participated in many important engagements, among which were the siege of Vicksburg and the battle of Atlanta, and Sherman's March to the Sea, serving with distinction as a member of the staff of General Blair. At the close of the war, he returned to Delaware county, and was united in marriage to Miss Mary Haldeman of Media, who died March 9, 1909, just ten years ago to the day. He is survived by four children, Mrs. S. S. Evans and J. Spencer Miller, of Media; Lieut. C. H. Miller, U.S.A., and Mrs. S. Lloyd McCarthy of Altoona.
