The Life Crushed Out of Johnnie Myers, an Altoona Teamster. On Wednesday afternoon John Myers, a son of William Myers, who keeps the Farmer's Hotel on Sixteenth street, was killed in a coal mine about eight miles above this city. It appears that at noon a number of teamsters were congregated around the mouth of Delaney's bank, a short distance beyond the Buckhorn tavern. As the dinner hour came the miners stopped work and Myers and several others concluded to go into the bank themselves. They were pushing a number of cars along the track when one of them jumped off and struck a prop, knocking it out. In an instant a great mass of stuff from overhead was loosened and fell on Myers, pinning him to the ground. About four tons fell on his lower extremities and before he could be released by his companions crushed the life out of him. He was entirely conscious for about five minutes and told his companions to hurry. Then he said he was going to die and almost immediately expired. It took almost an hour to release him. The body was not mangled nor seriously bruised. Immediately he was wrapped up and brought to his father's home. Young Myers was about 18 years of age and has for some time past been engaged with a four mule team in hauling coal to this city. Morning Tribune, Altoona, Pa., Thursday, January 27, 1881
