Smith, 91, of 301 Woodlawn avenue, Martinsburg, a leader in public education in the central Morrisons cove area for many years and long active in community, religious and agricultural affairs, was found dead this morning at 8.10 o'clock in the basement of his home while preparing to dust potato plants in his garden. At his death, Mr. Smith was secretary of the Morrisons Cove joint school district and had held many public positions both in Huston Township and Martinsburg borough. He held the distinction of handling every cent of revenue received through the Morrisons Cove High school since it was opened. Mr. Smith served as school board secretary for 21 years and was one of the citizens responsible for founding the Morrisons Cove High school 32 years, soliciting thousands of dollars in public subscriptions to finance its establishment. Mr. Smith retired from farming and moved to Martinsburg in 1925 after serving as township tax collector for eight years. Since residing in Martinsburg he served as tax collector for three years and was a member of council for four years. He was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran church, Martinsburg, for 65 years and served on the church council for 30 years. He also was a trustee and financial secretary of the Fairview Cemetery association for approximately a quarter century. A director of the Cove Community Fair association, Mr. Smith also was extremely active in the Cove Memorial Park association, contributing considerable time and effort toward park improvements. Mr. Smith was born Feb. 22, 1861, at Martinsburg, R.D., the son of George D. and Nancy Wike Smith, and married Elizabeth Metzger Nov. 22, 1894. She died March 9, 1936. Surviving are one daughter, Ruth, at home and a teacher in the Roosevelt Junior High school, Altoona; two brothers, James W., Roaring Spring and Preston C. of Martinsburg, also a number of nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the home after 7 o'clock tomorrow evening. SMITH - Funeral services for David W. Smith of 304 Woodlawn avenue, Martinsburg, will be held at the home Friday afternoon at 2.30 o'clock. Services will be in charge of Rev. J. Keller. Interment in Fairview cemetery, Martinsburg.
