Smith, 94, of Newry who was severely injured at 4:50 p.m. Monday in an accident involving an automobile on Rt. 220 in Newry, died at 9:45 p.m. yesterday in Nason Hospital, Roaring Springs. His condition was regarded as critical from the time of the accident and he died without regaining consciousness. He suffered a probable skull fracture. An autopsy was performed this morning to determine the exact cause of death, Deputy Coroner William T. Crawford reported. The automobile involved in the fatality, the third in the county thus far this year, was operated by Anna J. Ross, 23 of Claysburg, who was moving south within the borough. State Police reported the aged man walked into the side of the automobile while moving from the west side of the highway. Mr. Smith was born in Newry February 15, 1866, a son of Fred and Agnes (Wolf) Smith, and married Junie Ruggles, who died May 3, 1919. He was a member of the Newry Lutheran Church and had been employed at the Duncansville rolling mill until it closed. Surviving are five children: Mrs. Gertrude Peck, Theodore and Luther of Newry, Joseph of Pittsburgh and Chalmer of North East, Maryland, 42 grandchildren and 66 great grandchildren. Friends will be received at the Liebegott Funeral Home, Duncansville after 2 p.m. tomorrow. [death date, April 7, 1960]
