Mangled Remains of an Unknown Man Found Under an Engine. Early yesterday morning as Engineer McNoldy and Hudson, on locomotives 1357 and 487, were coming out of the east end of the tunnel the engineer ahead noticed that something was dragging underneath. The engines were stopped and the crushed and mutilated remains of a man were found fastened in the machinery. Both legs were crushed off, the right arm was torn off at the elbow and the trunk was torn and crushed almost to a pulp. The head, above the nose, was gone. The mangled mass of bone and flesh was partly covered with colored cotton and wool mixed drawers, and light chestnut brown pantaloons. No semblance of a shirt, coat or vest remained. The man's hair was black and a heavy dark moustache was left. The remains were brought to this city and given in charge of Undertaker Arthur. At daylight trackmen found a foot and other portions of the remains and burned them. A paper flour sack, containing some newly-washed shirts, was also found. Other than the articles mentioned there was nothing which would lead to identifying the unfortunate man. Coroner Poet was notified and after viewing the remains he went to Galitzin and Bennington, where he spent several hours in investigating the case. All that could be ascertained was the probable manner of the victim's accident. It is supposed that in riding on a freight train he fell off at the east end of the tunnel and was run over. The remains were interred in the almshouse cemetery this morning. Altoona Mirror, Altoona, Pa., Monday Evening, May 1, 1893
