Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Wertz are today quietly celebrating the fifty- fifth anniversary of their wedded life at their home, 419 East Harrison avenue. Fifty-five years ago today, February 2, 1870, Mr. Samuel Calvin Wertz led to the hymeneal altar Miss Mary Ellen Knepper. Mr. Wertz is the son of Solomon Wertz and was born on Nov. 20, 1848, in Blair township, Blair county, and was raised on the farm and on Feb. 2, 1870, was married to Miss Mary Ellen Knepper, the daughter of Charles and Hannah Knepper. To this union four children were born: Anna Rudy, the wife of David Cisler, deceased of 110 East Fourth avenue, Altoona; Charles S. of First avenue and Third street; Hannah Margaret, wife of August Tauber of 420 East Grant avenue and Samuel Homer who died young. After marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Wertz went to housekeeping in Altoona but only stayed in Altoona four months when they moved back to the farm. Mr. Wertz followed farming and driving team hauling between Hollidaysburg and Williamsburg. In those days Mr. Wertz was quite an athlete. About the year 1880, Mr. Wertz moved below Altoona on a farm owned by D. K. Ramey. Later he bought a small farm at what is now Greenwood and there he followed farming and hauling stone and for a small man, could load the largest stone of any man in all the country and could haul the all the heaviest loads at one time. He hauled a load of stone for the late John Kline when he was building the planing mill below Juniata that was so heavy they could not weigh it until he threw part of it off. In 1900 he sold his farm at Greenwood and moved back to Altoona and engaged in hauling coal and stone. In 1924 he sold his properly in the city and bought in the East End at 419 East Harrison avenue and is now living a retired life. Mr. Wertz is quite a figure in the East End. Although he is past 76 he does not look more than 60. Mrs. Wertz was born Oct. 15, 1850, at Springfield Furnace. She is now past 74 years old and would pass anywhere for less than 60. She is an estimable lady and one of the finest housekeepers in the county. She is affiliated with the First Lutheran church in Altoona and is identified with church work in general. Mrs. Wertz at one time in her younger days had the reputation of making the finest butter in all the country. Although age is creeping on apace they are both hate and hearty and bid fair to live quite a while. Their many friends join in wishing them many more anniversaries and much happiness.
