(Ebensburg, Pa.) 1867-1938: June 10, 1869 John Brookbanke, Jr., a young man aged about eighteen years, whose home is in this place, was so terribly injured on the New York and Erie railroad, on Thursday night last, that he died in a short time after the accident. Young Brookbanke was employed in a store at Driftwood, and in company with his employer had been to Erie to purchase goods, and on their way home both fell asleep in the cars. The latter gentleman woke up after passing his destination and found Mr. Brookbanke missing. He telegraphed back when he reached the next station, and learned that the unfortunate young man had been found on the track near the village of Youngsville, with one leg broken and suffering from internal injuries of a serious nature. The only recollection Mr. Brookbanke, who remained conscious up to the time of his death, had of the occurrence, was that he fell asleep on the train, and in that condition must have walked out of the cars and off the platform, with the result stated. None of the car wheels touched his person, his leg having probably been broken by the fall, and it is supposed that the lower step of the car platform struck him in the stomach, producing the internal injuries which caused his death. All that medical aid and the kindly ministrations of the good people of Youngsville could do, failed to save his life. One of his brothers reached the scene shortly before his death, and another, Orlando, who brought his remains home on Saturday night, did not get there till life was extinct. His mortal remains were followed to the grave in Lloyd cemetery, on Sunday afternoon, by a large concourse of sorrowing friends. He was a young man of excellent character and noble impulses, and his sad and shocking death has caused a deep feeling of sympathy in this community, where he was well known and much respected.
