About 8 o'clock Tuesday evening, in Chester Hill borough, adjoining Philipsburg, a double house occupied by Jacob Schneider and family and a widow named Mrs. Nicholas Herron, took fire and burned to the ground. A little 5 year daughter of Mrs. Herron perished in the flames. The circumstances as related by the Philipsburg Leger, are as follows: Mrs. Herron's husband was killed last June at Connellsville, leaving her with four little children, the oldest a boy aged eight years. She gave birth to another child ten days ago and was down stairs nursing it last evening. She wanted a dress for the baby and sent the little boy upstairs with a lamp into a room where two of the other children were in bed for the dress. The little boy brought the dress, and it is supposed set fire to something in the room, for some time afterwards, the mother heard a cracking sound upstairs. She was scarcely able to walk, but she went to foot of the stairs and saw that the room was on fire. She ran to the door and gave the alarm and people ran to the rescue. Her sister, Mrs. Miller, was one of the first to reach the place, and ran up to the room, which was all ablaze and got one of the children, a little boy, but was unable to get to where the little girl was. The fire companies responded promptly, and fearless men made desperate attempts to rescue the child but the fire was so fierce that they could not.
