M. shabodeho@aol.com November 26, 2009, 9:20 pm The Clearfield Evening Progress on 6/16/1913 R. A. SHILLINGFORD DIED AT 5:30 A.M,. His Sudden Death Casts Gloom Over This Section, Robert Adair Shillingford died at his home this morning at 5:30 o'clock, following an attack of acute indigestion. His death, totally unexpected, came with a suddenness that was as startling as it is unbelievable. The sad event has cast a gloom over this town and section. Sunday evening, Mr. Shillingford and family enjoyed an automobile ride to Woodland, and returning, sat upon the porch and conversed until bed time. At 4:30 o'clock this morning, Mr. Shillingford was seized with sudden illness. The first attack passed away and Dr. S. C. Stewart was summoned and was present when the end came, within an hour of the first attack. In the death of R. A. Shillingford, the town loses one of its foremost citizens, and Clearfield will be long in recovering from the blow received in his death. Born in Philadelphia about 56 years ago, the deceased came to Peale, Pa., in 1887. He was a civil engineer by profession, and after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, was selected as assistant engineer of the Cambria Steel Company at Johnstown. From there he came to the Clearfield Bituminous Coal Corporation, first as superintendent. He was later promoted to position of general superintendent and four years ago became vice president and general manager of this important concern. As a businessman, he was extensively known, and his judgment was largely respected. He was closely connected with the N. Y. C. Interests, and was a director of the Clearfield and Franklin railroad. Three years ago, he was elected president of the Clearfield Trust Co. and filled that position with great acceptance. His business interests in this section, was a member of Moshannon Lodge No. 391, F. & A. M. of Clearfield Chapter No. 228, R. A. M., of Clearfield. Pa., and Baldwin II Commandery, Williamsport. He also held membership at the University Club of Philadelphia. Mr. Shillingford came to this place in 1900, and erected a beautiful and commodious residence on the Old Town Road, south side. Mrs. Shillingford was formerly Miss Elizabeth Webb and died about four years ago. Two children, George Webb Shillingford and Miss Martha Reed Shillingford, survive. One brother, James Shillingford is a resident of Osceola. Mr. Shillingford was prominently identified with the Protestant Episcopal church in Clearfield. The funeral will be held on Wednesday, definite arrangements not having been made at this time. This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/pafiles/ File size: 3.0 Kb
