If I remember the story correctly, on his first day at work in the mines, he got his leg caught in a railroad coupling and lost that leg as a result. He then returned to high school and was to graduate in the spring of 1930, but about 3 weeks prior to the graduation, he died of some kind of kidney disease. In his honor at their graduation ceremonies, his classmates draped a gown and cap over the empty chair that would have been his.
