JESSE MAGAW 1794-1823 Jesse Magaw was born in Mercersburg, a son of Dr. William Magaw. He was educated at Marshall College, Mercersburg, and for a time was instructor in his Alma Mater. He read medicine with his father and began the practice in Mercersburg about 1809 or 1810. Dr. Magaw with Dr. John Boggs of Greencastle were Assistant Surgeons in 1814 in Colonel John Findlay's Regiment, Dr. John McClellan of Greencastle being Chief Surgeon. Dr. Magaw was a schoolmate of James Buchanan, later President of the United States, and married his sister, Marie, who was the widow of Samuel Johnston. Dr. Magaw died September 29, 1823, and was buried in a graveyard east of the town of Mercersburg. In time this graveyard became neglected and in 1922 his ashes and the marker on his grave were removed and placed in Spring Grove Cemetery near Lemaster, this county.
