McGOVRAN, M. D. 1797-1869 E. G. McGovran was born in 1797 at Martinsburg, W. Va., the only son of Phillip and Nancy (Farrelly) McGovran. He studied medicine with Dr. Bosely at Frederick, Md., and was a graduate of a medical school in Philadelphia. Dr. McGovran began the practice of medicine at Loudon about 1818. He removed to Mercersburg in 1821 or about that time, and practiced medicine there for a number of years. He then removed to Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County, and after a time to Fairmount, Va. He came to Chambersburg in 1865 and practiced here until his death in 1869. Dr. McGovran was a member of the first Medical Society in 1825, living in Mercersburg at that time. He married in 1825 Matilda Martin of Mercersburg. He belonged to the Masonic order and was a Democrat in politics. Dr. Wm. M. McGovran was a son.
