Derr, 73, passed away peacefully at home surround-ed by his wife and daughter on Thursday, September 9, 2010, at his residence. He was the husband of Shirley A. Derr, to whom he would have been married 33 years on October 1, 2010. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Shirley L. Heck Derr, on June 6, 1973. Born in West Reading, on August 22, 1937, he was the son of the late Henry (Ben) and Sadie I. (Dieffenbach) Derr. He was a 1955 graduate of Myerstown High School and served overseas in Japan in the U.S. Army. He had been a construction foreman for Burkey Construction, Reading, for 30 years, retiring in 1999. He was a member of St. John's Church, Mt. Aetna, Mt. Aetna Lions Club, Mt. Aetna Fire Co., Mt. Aetna Bicentennial Committee, Marion Senior Citizens, Blue Mountain 50 Plus Club, Rehrersburg Fire Co., and Bethel Fire Co., and a board member of the Andulhea Heritage Center, Rehrersburg. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Shelley L. Derr at home; his faithful friend, Nicki; sisters, Barbara Loose of Richland, and Susan, wife of Donald Emerick of Richland; brothers, Jacob, husband of Karen Derr of Mt. Aetna, and Thomas, husband of Elaine Derr of Richland; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Henry Derr. He leaves behind a loving family and many friends. Gerald wrote these words: Measure your thoughts, Measure your words, Measure your works and deeds, For your actions will be measured by the Master Carpenter- Jesus. Services will be private at the discretion of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Johns Church, P.O. Box 195, Mt. Aetna, PA 19544; or Mt. Aetna Bicentennial Fund, c/o Mt. Aetna Fire Co., P.O. Box 115, Mt. Aetna, PA 19544. Grose Funeral Home, Myerstown, is in charge of arrangements.
