Firestone, 75, died Saturday, December 31, 2011, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident on Rte. 22, East Hanover Twp. He was the husband of Shirley A. (Buchter) Firestone, who died on January 1, 2012. Born in Lebanon, on July 28, 1936, he was the son of the late Ernest W. and Lillian N. (Keller) Firestone. A 1954 graduate of Lebanon High School, he was a 1958 graduate of Albright College, Reading, and a graduate of Temple University, where he earned a master's degree in education. A star athlete in basketball, tennis, and cross country at Lebanon High School, he was recently inducted into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame. He began his career with the Cornwall-Lebanon School District in 1958, first teaching at Cornwall High School and later Cedar Crest High School. Over a period of 28 years at Cedar Crest High School, he served as the head coach of boys and girls basketball and tennis and served as Athletic Director. In 1981, he was inducted into the Central Chapter of PA Sports Hall of Fame in recognition of his coaching accomplishments. He led the girls basketball team to the 1990-1991 District III AAAA championship and advanced to the Eastern semi-finals of the state. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of the Good Shepherd, Lebanon. He taught Sundau School for many years at First Evangelical Congregational Church. Ernie enjoyed spending time with his family and enjoyed meeting his friends over coffee at McDonald's every morning. He is survived by daughters, Wendy, wife of Doug Wisehaupt of Mechanicsburg, and Marta, wife of Patrick O'Brien of Schwenksville; grandchildren, Grant and Paige Wisehaupt, and Patrick and Kelly O'Brien; sister, Susan, wife of Richard L. Kline, Sr. of Lebanon; brother, Ronald, husband of JoAnn Firestone of Palmyra; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. from the United Methodist Church of the Good Shepherd, Lebanon. There will be no viewing. A visitation will be held Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday at 10 a.m. at the church. Interment at Christ Lutheran Cemetery, Stouchsburg. Grose Funeral Home, Myerstown, is entrusted with the arrangements.
