Miller, 91, passed away Thursday, September 22, 2011, at her daughter's home in Michigan. She would have celebrated her 92nd birthday on October 2. Mildred was the wife of Edward H. Miller, an attorney in Lebanon, who preceded her in death this past December. They were married for 60 years. She spent most of her life in Lebanon before moving to Michigan several years ago. Born on the Christian Batdorf Farm in Lickdale, Lebanon County, on October 2, 1919, Mildred was the daughter of the late Paul Cleveland Wilhelm and Minnie I. Darkas Wilhelm. Mildred was a graduate of Pine Grove High School and Kutztown State Teachers College, where she received degrees in English and Library Science as well as a teaching certificate. Following graduation from Kutztown, Mildred taught school in Strausstown and Robesonia, and then became the school librarian at Harding Junior High School in Lebanon. She taught for approximately 10 years before dedicating her life to her family. As a member of Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lebanon she worked as a volunteer visiting the home-bound and was also a member of the Good Samaritan Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed activities with her family such as boating on the Chesapeake Bay, trips to Cape May, New Jersey, and visiting her daughters and grandson in Michigan where she summered for 25 years. She was an avid walker for exercise and was an excellent cook. Millie will be remembered by all who knew her as a compassionate, kind and gentle person. Her remarkable and unconditional love for her children and grandson will be keenly missed. Surviving are daughters, Elizabeth Holmes and Sally Miller, D.O., both of Michigan, a grandson, Alexander Edward Holmes, who is a senior in high school, and sister, Betty J. Wilhelm, Lebanon. She was preceded in death by a sister, Catherine I. Wilhelm and brothers, Frederick Wilhelm and Paul C. Wilhelm, Jr. Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend Mildred's funeral service on Monday, October 3, 2011, at 1:00 p.m. from the Ruffner- Porterfield Funeral Directors and Cremation Services, 890 Isabel Drive (next to Quentin Circle), Lebanon, with the Rev. Dr. Roger A. Bucy officiating. Interment will be held in the Mt. Lebanon Cemetery, Lebanon. Following the service there will be a gathering and lunch at the home on Nowlen Street, Lebanon. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Sunday evening, October 2, 2011 from 6 to 8 p.m. and from 12:00 p.m. til time of service on Monday.
