M. shabodeho@aol.com August 30, 2011, 4:35 pm Published in Lebanon Daily News on August 28, 2011 Ledyard Thompson SUEDBERG Ledyard "Ledge" Thompson, 81, of Schuylkill County, passed away on Friday, August 26, 2011, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Lebanon. Born on April 18, 1930, in Suedberg, he was the son of the late John W. and Eva Behney Thompson. He was an active member of the Suedberg Church of God, serving as the Financial Secretary. Ledge was a 1948 graduate of Pine Grove High School. He served in the U.S. Navy, the National Guard, and was a member of the Air Force Auxiliary. He had been a director on the Pine Grove School Board and served as President of the Pine Grove High School Band Parents for several years. He was a past president of the Pine Grove Lions Club, and served two years as a Worshipful Master of the Pine Grove Masonic Lodge #409 F. & A. M. He was the last living charter member of the Suedberg Fire Company. Ledge was a Certified Master Technician with Chrysler & A.S.E. Along with his wife, Kathleen, he operated Thompson's Garage in Suedberg for 20 years. He worked for L. & B. Dodge Chrysler Plymouth for 10 years until his retirement. He was a private, commercial, and helicopter pilot, and an instrument flight instructor, having taught many local pilots how to fly. His love of flying he shared with his father, brothers, and fellow pilots. Often, he provided plane rides to his daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and would surprise his daughter's friends with offers of plane rides both as children and adults. He managed the Pine Grove Airport for the Pine Grove Air Service and Boyer Land Corp. He was a member of the Civil Air Patrol and also held an amateur radio license. Collecting pipes and his interest in history were two of his hobbies. He contributed in the writing of "Come Fly with Me", a history of aviation in Pine Grove, compiled by the Historical Society. Having lived in Suedberg most of his life, he was jokingly called the Mayor of Suedberg by his friends. Ledge volunteered and mowed land for the Swatara State Park and in these last years enjoyed helping his brother, Bernie maintain his acres of land. Preceding him in death were two brothers, Richard Thompson and William Thompson; and a sister, Anna Swisher. Surviving are his wife, Kathleen E. Wolfe Thompson, with whom he enjoyed a marital span of 60 years; three daughters, Donna Jean, wife of Wade Donmoyer of Pine Grove, Vicky, wife of Jeffrey Benko of Berwick, Eileen, wife of John Mitchell of Ephrata; five granddaughters, Bridget Donofrio, Erin Brown, Erica Thomas, Emily Kocher, and Becky Allen-Mitchell; four great-grandsons; four great-granddaughters; one brother, Bernard Thompson, and a sister, Joan Shirley Ragus, both of Pine Grove; and nieces and nephews. Funeral services willl be held on Friday, September 2, 2011, at 11:30 a.m. in the H.L. Snyder Funeral Home, Inc., Pine Grove, with the Rev. Terry Jansma officiating. There will be a viewing on Friday from 9 a.m. until time of service, with Masonic services being held at 11:15 a.m. Interment will follow in the Suedberg Church of God Cemetery.
