M. shabodeho@aol.com August 18, 2012, 8:28 pm Published in Lebanon Daily News on August 15, 2012 PINE GROVE Kenneth Lamar "Hessy" Boyer, 79, passed away Sunday, August 12, 2012, in the M.S. Hershey Medical Center. Born on February 14, 1933, in Tremont, he was a son of the late Galen and Pearl Strausser Boyer. He grew up in Ravine with his three siblings, Ronald Boyer (deceased), Dion Boyer, and Kay Boyer Williams. The Boyers were a baseball family with Hessy, Ronald, Dion, and their father, Galen, all playing on the same team. Hessy graduated from Pine Grove High School in 1951 and worked in the textile industry for two years before entering the Navy in 1953 and serving during the Korean War. While in the Navy, Hessy toured the Pacific on the U.S.S. Point Defiance (Plank Owner) and U.S.S. Mt. McKinley and was present at the Atomic Tests at Bikini Atoll for Project Red Wing. Hessy was a member of the Naval reserve from 1957 to 1965. He was a Life Member of the Pine Grove American Legion Post 374, a member the Pine Grove V.F.W. Post 3432, the National Association of Atomic Veterans, National H- Bomb Observers, and the U.S.S. Mt. McKinley Association. After returning to civilian life, Hessy joined Quaker Alloy Casting Company in 1963 and worked for the company and its successor until his retirement in 1992, and then then worked at Camp Wood Haven as a handyman and caretaker. Hessy was married to his bride, Gail Walton Boyer, for over 52 years. Hessy and Gail's children and grandchildren are: son, Scott and wife, Doris V. Boyer, and daughters, Alexis and Emily of Fullerton, Calif.; son, Greg and wife, Jacquelline Boyer, and daughter, Claudia of Palmyra; and daughter, Kathy Boyer, and her daughter, Karli of Pine Grove. Hessy continued to enjoy baseball and softball well into his 70's. His playing included highlights of being on the All Navy Baseball team and trying out for the St. Louis Browns Major League team while being mentioned in Sports Illustrated as an upcoming player. He was a member of the St. Clair Old Timers Baseball Association and Senior Modified Old Timers League. Hessy was active in the community as well. He was a Life member in the Oak Grove Sportsman's Club, a member of the Pine Grove Township Recreation Committee, the Pine Grove Christmas Light Committee, and one of his favorites - the Mc Knights of the Round Table. He was also active in St. Peter's U.C.C. Church, where he served as a Deacon and Elder on the Consistory, was a member of the Men's Fellowship and Brotherhood, and the Church Work Party. Memorial services will be held at St. Peter's U.C.C., Pine Grove, on Saturday, August 18, 2012, at 10 a.m.. with the Rev. Raymond Hurst officiating. Interment will be in the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Pine Grove, at the convenience of the family. The family would prefer in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Memory of Kenneth L. Boyer to either the American Cancer Society. The H. L. Snyder Funeral Home, Inc., Pine Grove, is in charge of arrangements.
