BENDER James Samuel Bender, 67, of Kalona, Iowa, formerly of Meyersdale, died Nov. 6, 1995, at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City, Iowa, following open heart surgery. Born Sept. 6, 1928, near Salisbury, he was the son of Floyd C. and Anna Bender. He was preceded in death by his father and a sister, Mary (Mrs. Leslie) Byler of Kalona. Bender is survived by his wife, Martha Ropp Bender, and six children: Glendon and wife, Lorna, Goshen, Ind.; N. Lynn and wife, Barbara, Wellman, Iowa; Joyce (Mrs. Gary) Helmuth, Sarasota, Fla.; Merwin and wife, Sally; Kermit and wife, Lori; John and wife, Tammie, all of Goshen, Ind.; and 11 grandchildren. Also surviving are his mother, Anna Bender of Grantsville, Md.; and these brothers and sisters: Philip and wife, Lela, Grantsville; Naomi (Mrs. Paul) Yoder, Meyersdale; Sarah (Mrs. Daniel) Miller, Lancaster; Lois (Mrs. Ernest) Mullet, Greenwood, Del.; Paul and wife, Mary Louise; and Dorcas, all of Grantsville. He received an associate degree in Bible at Eastern Mennonite College, Harrisonburg, Va., and pastored churches in Michigan and Iowa. He was also active in music ministry, singing with, and directing, choral groups. The funeral service was held at Sunnyside Mennonite Church, with John King, Glendon Bender and Gary Helmuth serving as clergy. Interment was at the Fairview Cemetery.
