Cook Takes Own Life Former Editor of the Berlin Record Commits Suicide at Frostburg, Md. Henry F. Cook, aged 63 years, was found dead at 6:30 a.m. Monday in a small outbuilding in the rear of his residence at 12 Mt. Pleasant Street, Frostburg, Md., having bled to death from a self-inflicted wound across his throat. Mr. Cook, a member of the Maryland Legislature, had been in ill health during recent months and while working Monday, June 8, at his store on Broadway became extremely ill. He was to have been admitted to the Miner's Hospital on Monday for an operation, and it is thought that a general breakdown of his health and fear of the operation was responsible for his death. Mr. Cook was a native of Barton, Md., where he was born May 17, 1868. He was a printer by trade and was a member of Cumberland Typographical Union and was secretary and treasurer of the Labor Temple Association. He had been a printer from boyhood and at various times conducted weekly newspapers at various places, among them the Berlin Record, some years ago. Mr. Cook was always regarded as a citizen of the very highest type. He held membership in the Odd Fellows, Junior O.U.A.M., Knights of the Golden Eagle, Masonic Fraternity, Eastern Star, Knights of Pythias and the P.O.S. of A. He was a self-educated man and had acquired much knowledge from extensive reading and research work. For many years he took a great interest in the Duke Memorial Bible Class of Cumberland and was a frequent visitor to the meetings of that organization. He was a member of the firm of Cook & Schneider, Frostburg printers, which was dissolved after Mr. Cook returned recently from the session of the Maryland Legislature. Mr. Cook retiring from the firm for the purpose of engaging in the confectionary business in Frostburg. Mr. Cook for many years was one of Frostburg's most active prohibitionists. Leaving the prohibition party he became a registered Republican and was one of the six citizens of Allegany County elected last Fall to the House of Delegates in the Maryland General Assembly. Mr. Cook is survived by his aged mother, his wife and three daughters. Funeral services were conducted at 3 p.m., Wednesday, at the family home by Rev. Winthrop Stilwell, pastor of First English Baptist Church of Frostburg assisted by Rev. Austin O. Bota, pastor of Eckhart Baptist Church and the Baptist choir. The funeral was largely attended and there was a profusion of floral tributes. At the grave the ritual of the Junior O.U.A.M. was read by officers of that organization. A delegation from the Maryland Assembly was present. Meyersdale Republican, June 18, 1931
