Cupples, 62, pastor of St. Patrick's Catholic Church of Newry (Blair County) and a former pastor of Sts. Philip and James Catholic Church, Meyersdale, died unexpectedly of a heart attack Tuesday, Jan. 4, 1972, in the church rectory there. He was also serving as pastor of St. Ann Mission at Roaring Spring. Father Cupples assumed the Newry pastorate in 1957 when he left the Meyersdale church. He also had served at St. Bridgid's, in Lilly; St. Leo's in Altoona; St. Mary's in Hollidaysburg; and Our Lady of Mercy Church in Johnstown. A native of Altoona and a graduate of the former Altoona Catholic High School, he prepared for the priesthood at St. Francis College and Seminary in Loretto. He was ordained May 26, 1934, at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Altoona, by the late Bishop John J. McCort. Born Feb. 9, 1909, he was a son of James and Mary Jane (Ruffley) Cupples. He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Helen Berger, North Cape May, N. J. Funeral mass was conducted Saturday morning in St. Patrick's Church, Newry, with the Most Rev. Bishop James J. Hogan, D. D., concelebrant, and the Rev. Edward Davis, rector of St. John Gualbert's Co-Cathedral, Johnstown, preacher. Interment Calvary Cemetery, Altoona. Meyersdale Republican, June 13, 1972 [C1324]
