HANDWERK Brigadier General Morris C. Handwerk. (US Army ret.) 76, died Monday, Aug. 28, at Morton F. Plant Hospital, Belleair Beach, Fla., where he had lived since retiring from the army in 1951. A native of the Meyersdale area, he was born in Summit township, Feb. 17, 1891, a son of John A. and Mary (Crowe) Handwerk. Survivors include his wife, May S. Handwerk, Belleair Beach; a daughter, Mrs. Beverly White Duncan, and four grandchildren Robert, Russell, Raleigh and Laura Duncan, all of Shaker Heights, Ohio; also a brother, Galen Handwerk, Berlin; and two sisters, Mrs. Harvey Romesberg, Rockwood; and Mrs. Asa Shuck, Meyersdale RD. Gen. Handwerk's retirement in 1951 followed 38 years of service in the US Army, in both World Wars I and II. He was a graduate of the Army War College, the Command and General Staff School and the Chemical Warfare School. He served in Peking, China; the Philippines, Hawaii, Okinawa and Japan. His decorations include the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster. He commanded anti-aircraft at Camp Edwards, Mass., and Camp Haan, Calif. He was a member of the Retired Officers Club, the Disabled Officers Club, both of Clearwater and St. Petersburg, Fla.; Masonic Lodge No 99, F&AM, Bradenton, Fla.; and Calvary Episcopal Church, Indian Rocks, Fla. He served on the Belleair Beach Council from 1959-61 and again in 1963; was on the charter board and a chairman of the Belleair Beach Board of Adjustment and Appeal. Funeral service was held in Fort Harrison Chapel, conducted by Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Frank L. Titus, (US Army ret.) rector at Calvary Episcopal Church. Burial was made in Arlington National Cemetery, Fort Meyer, Va., with full military honors. Meyersdale Republican, September 21, 1967 [H0153]
