He was born in Germany on November 11, 1853, and was 90 years, 11 months, and 12 days old at the time of his death. The son of Charles and Fredericka Kuffer, he was baptized in Germany and confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Germany on Easter Sunday in 1865. The next year, 1866, he came to America on a sailing vessel. In Meyersdale, where he lived for many years, he joined Amity Church where he served as Elder. Here also he was married to Elizabeth Poschman, the daughter of Conrad and Elizabeth Poschman, on February 14, 1880. Two of their children, John and Ruth, died in infancy. Another daughter, Eliza Lenore, wife of Martin A. Miller, died in 1910. Besides his wife, three daughters survive: Mary, wife of J. William Kline; Olive, wife of Henry G. Gress, Esq.; Anna Martha, at home. There are four grandchildren: Lt. George E. Kline with the Army in France; Ensign Robert L. Kline with the Navy in the Pacific; Albert Rudolph Kline of Friedens; Miss Sarah Elizabeth Gress, a student at Juniata College. There is also one great-grandchild, Douglas Coleman Kline, a son of George E. Kline. Rev. Dr. George L. Roth, pastor of St. Paul's Reformed Church, Somerset of which Mr. Kuffer was a member, conducted the service on October 26. He was assisted by Rev. Frank D. Witmer of Berlin. Mr. Kuffer was a regular church attendant and loyal churchman and loved the country to which he came as a lad after a long journey on a sailing vessel. Meyersdale Republican, December 14, 1944
