He arrived here from Texas for a visit about three weeks ago and soon became ill of a heart ailment, from which he did not recover. Mr. Lief spent much of his life in the Army. He was in the regular army for many years. In the first World War he fought as an infantryman. In World War II, he served in the Merchant Marine, transporting oil and gasoline from Texas to points in the Pacific theatre. He received his discharge, due to ill health, about 6 months ago. The body lay in state at the Lief home until Tuesday afternoon when it was removed to the B & O Railroad station, accompanied by a guard of honor composed of members of Charles E. Kelly Post, American Legion, and placed aboard a train for Port Arthur, Texas, where services will be held December 15, and where interment will be made. He is survived by his wife who resides in Port Arthur, three sisters, Mae and Margaret Lief, and Mrs. Tom Reese, of Johnstown; and three brothers, Augustus Lief of Cumberland, Robert of Meyersdale and Leo of Johnstown. Leo accompanied the body of his brother to Port Arthur. Meyersdale Republican, December 13, 1945
