Marteeny, retired farmer and Somerset County's oldest and most widely known sale cryer, died at his home in Somerset at 1:25 a.m., Dec. 27th at the age of 81 years. He suffered a stroke of paralysis on Nov. 26th and had been bedfast since. He was born in Somerset Twp. Jan. 27, 1864, a son of Chauncey and Eliza (Barton) Marteeny. He was married in 1881 to Mary Metzler, who died on Dec. 28, 1932. Surviving are a daughter, Miss Gertude Marteeny who lived with her father and cared for him during his last illness. He left also one grandchild and one great-grandchild. Two sons - William and Thomas - preceded him in death. He was a successful farmer in Milford Twp. for 38 years before he retired and became a resident of Somerset where he devoted the remainder of his life to auctioneering until stricken a month before his death. In his career as an auctioneer, he conducted more than 4,000 public sales. He was the official auctioneer of the Somerset County Commissioners, and cried his last major sale several months ago when the Ralphton Coal Company was sold under the hammer. Mr. Marteeny was a member of the Grace Evangelical Church of Somerset. Funeral services for him were held in the Church at 2:30 p.m. last Saturday. Officiating was Rev. Dr. Herman Kaebnick, superintendent of the Pittsburgh Conference and a former pastor of the local church, assisted by Rev. Reed S. Shirey, present pastor, and Rev. B. F. Bungard D.D., pastor of the Somerset United Brethren Church. Interment was in the Husband Cemetery under direction of the Hoffman Funeral Home. Meyersdale Republican, January 3, 1946
