McElroy, 97, of New Kensington, died Jan. 28, 1998 at Citizens General Hospital, New Kensington. Born Sept. 18, 1900 in Allegheny Township. She lived in Somerset from 1930 to 1965 when she returned to the New Kensington area. Graduate of Ken High School, Class of 1919. Graduate of Citizens General Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1922. Miss McElroy for 35 years worked as a private duty nurse and in general duty nursing in the Somerset area. Retired 1965. While in Somerset she was an active member of Somerset Presbyterian Church and Somerset Graduate Nurses Association, serving in different offices of both organizations. Survived by sister, Mrs. Joanna "Josie" Carnahan of Cheswick, and six nieces and one nephew. Preceded in death by her parents: Joseph G. and Elizabeth Hawk McElroy; sister, Jean Gensamer; a half-sister, Lillian McElroy; two half-brothers: Hugh A. and Birt C. McElroy. Family and friends may call from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Churchfield-Peters Funeral Home, 501 Fifth Ave., New Kensington, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday with her pastor, the Rev. L. Kenneth Hooten II, officiating. Interment, Plum Creek Cemetery, Plum Borough.
