Jr. 07/26/07 The New Republic. April 14, 1923 July 13, 2007 John A. McKenzie Jr., 84 of Salisbury, died July 13, 2007, at Meyersdale Medical Center, Meyersdale. He was born April 14, 1923, in Meyersdale, a son of the late John A. Sr. and Bernadine (Knecht) McKenzie. He was also preceded in death by a son, Patrick Edward McKenzie. He is survived by his wife, Ruth E. (Witt) McKenzie; one son, John Michael McKenzie, and wife, Lea, Salisbury; two daughters: Sandra Miller and husband, Nicholas, and Pamela Rose McKenzie, all of Longview, TX; one brother, James Francis McKenzie and wife, Jane, Salina, Kan.; one sister, Mary Marceline Kane, Wilmington, Del.; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Mr. McKenzie was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, West Salisbury, and was a self-employed welder. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of Salisbury American Legion and was founder of the Salisbury-Elk Lick Veteran's Memorial. He was past president of the Salisbury Lions Club; past president and founder of the Salisbury-Elk Lick Chamber of Commerce, founder of the Tub Mill Arts Association, founder of the Salisbury-Elk Lick Historical Association, co-founder of Adopt a Grandparent with his wife and he helped establish the Salisbury Family Center, and a longtime member of RSVP of Somerset County. He was the first EMT in Somerset County and taught EMT classes afterwards. Mr. McKenzie received the Daily Points of Light Award for his volunteerism. Friends were received at Newman Funeral Home Inc. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Michael's Catholic Church. The Rev. Albert Anselmi officiating. Following cremation, a graveside service was held at Salisbury Cemetery with military graveside rites accorded by the Salisbury American Legion. The Rosary was recited in the funeral home.
