Gideon D. Miller, of Springs, Pa., passed away very suddenly Tuesday evening, November 5th, 1940, at 11:00 p.m. In December 1939 Mrs. Miller suffered a paralytic stroke from which she never fully recovered. She was able to be around the home and perform some of the lighter tasks of the household, but walking was difficult and she did not have full use of her right arm. For several days previous to her death, she seemed to be in better health, and was very much encouraged. Shortly after retiring on Tuesday evening she became violently ill. The doctor was called immediately but she passed away within an hour after she became ill. The cause of her death being another paralytic stroke. Mrs. Miller was born in Garrett County, Maryland, on Sept. 20th, 1861, and was therefore 79 years, 1 month and 16 days of age. She was the oldest daughter of the late Jacob J. Otto and Anna (Bender) Otto, who resided near Grantsville. Both of Mrs. Miller's parents came from Germany when they were quite young. On Feb. 15th, 1891, she was married to Gideon D. Miller, and has been a resident of the vicinity of Springs since her marriage. Plans were being made to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary on Feb. 15th next, at which time they would have been married 50 years. She spent all but the first few years of her married life in the home where she died, which was one of the early homes built in Springs. She leaves to mourn her departure her husband and three sons, Dwight L., Myron G., and Aaron G. Miller, and eight grandchildren, all of Springs. Also one brother, J. J. Otto, and two sisters, Mrs. H. M. Geinett and Mrs. Wilson Livengood, also of Springs. Three sisters, two brothers and a grandchild preceded her in death. She was a member of the Mennonite Church, having joined this faith in early life, and was a consistent and faithful member until death. She was a devoted wife and a kind and loving mother, and was never happier than when performing some deed of kindness. Her chief interests in life centered around her home and children. She was an excellent cook and took great delight in preparing special meals, always preferring to serve rather than to be served. She was a great lover of flowers, and spent much of her time in recent months in caring for her big collection of flower plants, since she was unable to attend to the more strenuous household duties. Funeral services were held in the Springs Mennonite Church on Friday afternoon, Nov. 8th. Officiating at the services were Rev. S. G. Shetler of Johnstown and Rev. Roy Otto, of Springs. The body was laid to rest in the Springs Cemetery. The floral tributes were many, and were very beautiful. Funeral arrangements were in charge of Undertaker William Winterberg, of Grantsville.
