Born Jan. 30, 1925 in Jennings, Md., he was a son of Austin Ray Platter, Grantsville, Md., and the late Rosie (Fresh) Platter. He was the dam tender at the Savage River Dam, and he was responsible for releasing the water for the White Water Races. He was a veteran of World War having served as a technician fifth grade with the U.S. Army. He was a member of Victory Post 155, American Legion, Westernport, Md.; the Jennings United Methodist Church; the Civil Service Radio Association, and three square dance clubs: The Belles and Beaux of Cumberland, Md., the Mountain Top Promenaders of Oakland, Md. and the Highland Twirlers of Ridgeley. Surviving in addition to his father is his widow, Nellie J. (Wiley) Platter; three sons: Richard Ray Platter, St. Louis, Mo.; Donald Emmons Platter and Guy Eugene Platter, both of Grantsville, Md.; two brothers: Claude Platter and Ellis Platter, both of Grantsville, Md.; three sisters: Pauline Kerns, Oakland, Md.; June Platter and Alma Platter, both of Grantsville, Md.; and 10 grandchildren. Friends were received at the Newman Funeral Home. Services were conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Jennings United Methodist Church by the Rev. Joseph Upole and the Rev. Rodney Murray. Interment, Grantsville Cemetery. Pallbearers were Ron Broadwater, Bernard Milburn, Earl Fatkin, Barney Langan, Jesse Mole and Bob Eaton. The Republic, August 31, 1989 [P0659]
