Born May 10, 1912, in Somerset Township, son of Joseph Franklin and Stella Grace (Friedline) Stern. Preceded in death by parents; son Edgar Paul Stern; sisters Nancy Briar, Melda Phillippi, Bessie and Ruth Stern and Evelyn Berkey; and brothers Edmund, Jacob, Ross and Paul Stern. Survived by wife, the former Nelma Jean Leaphart, to whom he was married for 58 years; children Mrs. Ronald L. (Donna) Deaner of Somerset and Mrs. George E. (Esther) Dively of Friedens; and three grandchildren Dawn M. Woolston, Chad E. Dively and Joshua E. Dively. 1930 graduate of Somerset High School. 54-year member of Bethany United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday School, served as lay leader, choir member, president, vice president, secretary and treasurer of United Methodist Men's Group, and president of Sunday School Association and numerous other church committees. World War II veteran, U.S. Army. Member of NARFE, American Legion Post 554. Previously employed by the former White Tail Feed, Beritts Feed Stores and school bus driver for McNelly Bus Co., all of Somerset. Former tax collector for Somerset Township. Retired in 1977 from Somerset Post Office with 30 years service. Honored in 1999 as a member of the Pa. Voters Hall of Fame for Somerset County. Friends received from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Hauger-Zeigler Funeral Home, Somerset, where services will be conducted 10 a.m. Saturday, with the Revs. Barry K. Ritenour, Don Krestar and Sherman Berkey officiating. Interment, Somerset County Memorial Park. Contributions may be made to the Bethany United Methodist Church, 204 W.
