Stoughton Dies Suddenly Prominent in Highway Work and Identified With Mining Industry Robert A. Stoughton, Sr., 59, of the Green Gables, Jenner Township, died suddenly of a heart attack Monday evening in Walterboro, S.C., while enroute from Florida to his home. Mr. Stoughton, in company with his wife and son, James B. Stoughton, the latter manager of Green Gables, had spent the past six weeks in Florida. They were enroute home and had just stopped in Walterboro for the night when Mr. Stoughton was stricken fatally. He died before a physician could be summoned. Robert A. Stoughton was prominently identified with the mining industry and the State Highway Department work in Somerset County for many years. He served as district engineer at the Uniontown district office of the State Highway Department under the Earle Administration. Prior to that time he was Somerset County maintenance superintendent of the State Highway Department. The deceased was born in Philadelphia. His father died when he was a young man and his mother later married James H. Black. Mr. and Mrs. Black moved to Meyersdale a short time after their marriage and there Robert A. Stoughton attended the public and high schools. He took up civil engineering in college and devoted the remainder of his life to that profession. Surviving are his wife, Edith (Maurer) Stoughton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Maurer of Boswell, one daughter, Mrs. Louis Maust, and two sons, James B. Stoughton of Jennerstown and Robert A. Stoughton, Jr., of Somerset. Funeral services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Green Gables Inn, Jennerstown, with the Rev. Mr. Brantley officiating. Interment will be in the Reformed Church cemetery, Jennerstown, under the direction of Jay Hoffman, Boswell mortician. Meyersdale Republican, February 15, 1940
