Born July 13, 1917, in Petersburg, a son of the late Walter David and Edna (Hamstead) Trenton. Attended elementary, grade school, St. John's Academy (3 years), and graduated in 1934 from Petersburg High School. Education and training included: Attending West Virginia University, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa in 1935, having graduated in 1938 with a A.B. degree in Pre-Medicine, Medical School at the University of Pennsylvania from 1938-42, graduating with a M.D. degree. Commissioned Lt. (JG) U.S. Navy from 1942-1943, having done a rotating internship at U.S. Naval Hospital, Bethesda, Md. Served at the Naval Aviation Cadet Recruiting Station in Atlanta, Ga., for 4 months before being assigned to Destroyer Escort Division 13, where he served from 1943-45, this division served as an escort to transatlantic convoys and small aircraft carriers during anti-submarine duty in the Atlantic; then transferred to U.S. Naval Hospital in St. Albans, N.Y., in 1945 for 6 months before being transferred to U.S. Naval hospital in Portsmouth, Va. for 1 year. Assigned to Tsingtao, China, from 1947-1948, before returning to U.S. Naval Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa. for residency training in General Surgery. Assigned to U.S. Naval Hospital Ship Consolation in 1950, where he served in Korea. Returned to U.S. Naval Hospital, Philadelphia, to complete residency training from 1951-1952 before being assigned to U.S. Naval Hospital, Portsmouth, N.H, as Chief of Surgery. He then resigned from the U.S. Navy Medical Corps in 1955 and came to Kingwood, W.Va., to help staff the newly constructed Preston Memorial Hospital. He was admitted to fellowship in the American College of Surgeons in 1953, then certified by the American Board of Surgery in 1954 and became a member of the W.Va. chapter of the American College of Surgeons in 1955, where he served as president for 1 year and Governor to the American College for 2 years. He received an appointment as Clinical Professor of Surgery at WVU in 1974. He then retired from private practice in Kingwood in 1982 and as Clinical Professor of WVU in 1987. Member of various clubs and organizations in the area, including: Former member of Kingwood Rotary Club; served on the board of directors and past president of Preston Country Club; served on City Council; past general chairman of Preston County Buckwheat Festival; served as Elder in First Presbyterian Church; served as chairman of the Kingwood Public Library during the period of planning and construction; past member of Preston County Medical Society, retired member of W.Va. State Medical Association and AMA. Survived by one son and spouse, Walter David and Carolyn Trenton of Somerset, Pa.; one daughter and spouse, Deborah and Randy Livengood of Kingwood; one brother, Arthur Francis Trenton of Petersburg, W.Va., and 5 grandchildren: Brooke Trenton and John David Trenton, both of Somerset, Pa., and Bryan Livengood, Matthew Livengood and Kelly Livengood, all of Kingwood. Preceded in death by 3 brothers: David Hamstead Trenton, Robert Walter Trenton and Donald Paul Trenton. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 22, at First Presbyterian Church, Kingwood, with the Rev. John M. Zuercher officiating. Private graveside services will be held at Maple Hill Cemetery, Petersburg. Memorial donations may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Kingwood, 104 E.
