Born April 24, 1936, in Mifflin County, he was the son of the late William Taft Varner and Mary Elizabeth Pagenta Varner. Preceded in death by two brothers, Bruce and Robert Varner. Survived by a daughter, Cynthia Hernandez and husband Salvador, Vale, N.C.; a son, John Patrick Varner Jr. and wife, Tammy, Newton; three sisters, Rosie Parks, Burnham; Shirley Varner, Rochester, N.Y.; and Jeanette Bennion, Palmyra; a brother, Stewart Varner, Mulberry, Fla.; and four grandchildren, Zachary Varner, Cody Varner, Samantha Varner and Sara Hernandez. He owned numerous businesses in his life, and was a general contractor since 1963 until the late nineties. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, outdoorsman and world traveler. A celebration of John's life was held at 8 p.m. Thursday at Jenkins Funeral Home Chapel. Memorials may be made to American Diabetes Association, 222 South Church St., Suite 336M, Charlotte, NC 28202.
