The boy saw Wilkins staggering on the track and a moment later he heard the shrill blast of a locomotive whistle as a freight train approached. The lad tried to drag the man from the track but the man was heavy and the boy frail. Running down the track the boy made frantic efforts to signal the engineer but it was dark and the train came on and the man was ground to pieces. It is said that Wilkins had been drinking. The body was terribly mangled. Wilkins was a miner for the Baker-Whitley Coal Company. He had been in town all day and was on his way home but wondered on the railroad. He leaves a widow and nine children. Meyersdale Commercial, Feb. 24, 1916
