HARTMAN, born in Manchester Township, March 29, 1862, is the sixth son of Peter and Mary (Hartzler) Hartman, of York and Dauphin Counties. He was brought up in Manchester Borough, received a good education in the public schools, and at the age of seventeen years began the trade of stone-cutter with his brother in Manchester Borough, and in September, 1883, he went into business for himself. He is a skilled workman, and the only stone-cutter in the place. He is financial secretary of the P. O. S. of A. at Manchester, and has filled all the official chairs of the order. He is leader of Mt. Wolf Cornet Band, and instructor of the Starview Cornet Bank. He is an accomplished cornetist, and plays any and all of the brass instruments. His musical education is self- acquired.
